Tunxi
Tunxi, the center of Huangshan City, is a town with
100,000 inhabitants. Because of the railway station
and airport in Tunxi, it is the first stop of most travellers
who are going to visit Huangshan. There is an ancient
shopping street, called Laojie by local people (means
Old Street), in the center of Tunxi. The 1,500 meters
long street was firstly built during Song Dynasty (960-1279
AD), most buildings left today were constructured in
Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD) though. It had been the
central shopping place of local people for centuries
until late 1980s when the shops started to sell souvenirs
to tourists. Teas, ink stones, antiques and Chinese
paintings can be found everywhere. It is highly recommended
to try Chinese food at Laojie Yilou at the estern entrance
of the street. Cheap and delicious but crowded during
dinner time.
